In 1965 begon Tom of Finland te experimenteren met het idee van een doorlopend personage voor zijn stripverhalen, de ultieme Tom's Man. Hij probeerde een blonde genaamd Vicky - een veelvoorkomende mannelijke naam in Finland - gevolgd door een door Tarzan geïnspireerde Jack. In 1968 koos Tom uiteindelijk voor Kake, een donkerharige, snor dragende leatherman die vaak een strak wit T-shirt droeg met het motto "Fucker." Kake deed zijn naam eer aan, een soort post-Stonewall, hyper-mannelijke Johnny Appleseed die de wereld rondreisde op zijn motor om de zaden van bevrijde, wederzijds bevredigende, extatisch expliciete homoseksuele seks te verspreiden. Tom leefde veel van zijn meest persoonlijke fantasieën uit via Kake, en Kake's internationale fans maakten hem het voorbeeld voor wat bekend zou worden als de gay clone-look van de jaren 70. Tussen 1968 en 1986 publiceerde Tom 26 afleveringen van Kake-avonturen, meestal als boekjes van 20 pagina's.
